Southern Cities Lead in Graduate Jobs
The latest analysis from ADP Research reveals that fast-growing Southern cities are emerging as hiring hot spots for recent college graduates, reports The WSJ. Birmingham, Ala. tops the list for entry-level roles tied to college degrees, with Tampa, Fla., Raleigh, N.C., and other Sunbelt metro areas also ranking high for their combination of hiring, wages, and affordability.
Six of the top 10 metros for 20-something degree holders are located in the South, supported by robust job creation across healthcare, bioscience, engineering, and technology sectors. According to the data, this hiring uptick contrasts with last year’s downcycle and shows regional resilience in the US job market.
What Drives Hiring Hotspots
ADP’s rankings assessed payroll records of over 400,000 Americans in their 20s, weighing hiring rates for degree-required roles against wage levels and local cost of living.

Birmingham stands out with a 16% gain in median graduate wages to $59,004 and affordable rental costs, supported by employers in biosciences, automotive, and advanced materials. Major new job announcements by manufacturers and utilities are fueling local demand for engineers and related professions.
Tampa showed the largest jump from last year, with the nation’s strongest graduate hiring rate. Key industries fueling Tampa’s job market include healthcare, finance, and technology. Rental prices are stabilizing after a significant run-up, further improving the market for new grads relocating to the city. That affordability shift mirrors broader migration patterns across Southern metros, where lower living costs continue drawing younger professionals despite elevated housing demand.
Other Regional Standouts
San Jose rose dramatically by benefiting from a rebound in junior tech-sector roles, partially driven by AI-related hiring, despite higher costs of living.

The region offers some of the highest grad salaries in the country. Columbus, Ohio leads in the Midwest as a hiring hotspot, leveraging both advanced manufacturing growth and a coordinated approach to talent development by local employers and healthcare networks.
Raleigh, N.C.—while dropping to fifth place after two years at the top—continues to offer strong career starts due to its proximity to major research institutions and a solid base of health and science employers. As graduate hiring recovers unevenly across the country, Sunbelt metro areas and a handful of innovation hubs are setting the pace for early-career professionals.
