Walmart Plans $400M Cibolo Distribution Center in Texas
  • Walmart plans a 744,433-square-foot distribution center in Cibolo, Texas, with an estimated $400 million cost that includes office space, according to an Oct. 28 state filing.
  • Construction is set to begin in February, with completion expected Aug. 1, 2029. The filing doesn’t say whether the building will use automation technology.
  • The project follows Walmart’s comment that supply chain spending should peak over the next two years as it automates its network, alongside new fulfillment centers in California and Georgia.
Key Takeaways

Walmart has filed plans for a massive new distribution center in Cibolo, Texas, Retail Dive reports.

The facility spans 744,433 square feet and carries an estimated $400 million price tag, office space included, per a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing dated Oct. 28.

The Timeline

Ground breaks in February. The filing lists Aug. 1, 2029 as the completion target.

The filing is silent on automation, and Walmart didn’t respond to Retail Dive’s request for comment.

Supply Chain Spending Peaks

Walmart signaled earlier this year that its supply chain outlays will “peak” within two years. It has also been automating its distribution centers, aiming to lower shipping expenses through more efficient operations.

Zoom Out

Walmart is working on its Texas footprint elsewhere too. As we reported, an $8M remodel at its New Braunfels distribution center covers 96,715 square feet, with construction starting Aug. 17, 2026 and finishing by Sept. 17, 2027.

Beyond Texas, Walmart brought a fulfillment hub of 900,000 square feet online in Stockton, California, this month to add West Coast capacity. Another, at 1.5 million square feet, is planned in Georgia, with construction slated to start by year-end.

Why It Matters

A $400 million owner-occupied build by one of the country’s largest retailers is a notable addition to the San Antonio-area industrial pipeline.

It also shows retailers putting capital into their own logistics networks, not just leasing space from developers.

At the other end of the scale, Walmart has been testing small hubs. Our brief on its Spark Delivery Depots covered former drugstores of about 20,000 square feet that stock fast-moving items for online orders, with delivery in as little as 30 minutes in select markets. Walmart has also run an earlier depot in Dallas.

What’s Next

Look for a February groundbreaking and, eventually, details on whether automation is part of the plan. The target opening is August 2029.
