Project Ends, Expansion Remains
Bisnow reports that Base Power and the city of Austin ended negotiations over a proposed $4.85M incentive package. The deal would have supported a $265M, 486KSF facility in southeast Austin under the city’s Business Expansion Program.
However, Base Power has not abandoned its Austin plans. The company registered a smaller $1.92M, 216KSF manufacturing and warehouse project in the MetCenter park. This move signals continued interest in expanding within the region.
Why It Matters
The original battery manufacturing plan included 500 new jobs and retained 100 existing positions, signaling strong job growth for Austin. However, both sides ended incentive talks, exposing challenges in aligning public and private interests on large industrial projects.
Even so, the incentive package is no longer in play. Still, Base Power continues pursuing projects in East Austin, keeping local CRE stakeholders focused on battery facility development. This sustained industrial interest comes as other CRE sectors, including self-storage, continue to see strong post-pandemic demand and expansion activity across markets.
A Shift North
Base Power is moving forward with its strategy elsewhere in Texas. The company is set to provide 100 megawatts of home battery storage for Denton County Electric Cooperative near Dallas-Fort Worth over the next two years, reinforcing its presence in energy storage beyond Austin. With recent funding rounds totaling over $1B, Base Power remains a significant player in the Texas battery manufacturing facility market.
